How Much Food Do We Throw Away?
A report written by a school environment group about measuring and reducing food waste in the school canteen.
Last term, our environment group decided to find out how much food was wasted in the school canteen. We had noticed that many students left half their lunch on their plates. For two weeks, some of us stood next to the bins at the end of every lunch break. At the end of each day, we weighed the bucket and wrote the result in a table. We also took a photo of the full bucket every day to show in school assemblies.The results surprised everyone. On average, the school threw away 23 kilograms of food a day, which is enough to feed about sixty people. We also gave out a short questionnaire to find out why students did not finish their meals.The main reason was that the portions were too big, especially for younger students. We presented our findings to the head teacher and the canteen manager in March, and they listened carefully to our suggestions.Since then, the canteen has started offering small and large portions, and students can go back for more if they are still hungry. The cooks have also changed two of the least popular dishes. We are very proud of the project, and we hope other schools will try something similar.
